When oppo was created in its current form, the powers that be at Gawker decided it was 2 words. Once they handed the reins over to the current admins, we changed it to one word because that's how it was back in the olden days when you had to include #oppositelock on your post for it to show up.

Neither, actually. It's "Oppos Itelock." "Itelock" is an old Scandinavian term for "gunning the engine around a corner you really shouldn't make." Ray Wert (dragon his soul) really liked that idea (sort of like Mazda's "Jinba ittai") and made it a motto of the board.
